If you’re gearing up for a hike, the first and most important piece of equipment you should buy is a pair of hiking shoes or boots. If you twist an ankle or get blisters, chances are the rest of your hiking experience won’t go well or you won’t be able to continue with it at all. When exploring the Australian trails, you’ll probably come across uneven terrain full of roots and rocks, and you’ll need quality men hiking footwear to provide your feet with traction and support and protect them against sharp objects. When shopping for any type of outdoor gear, you’ll come across a myriad of choices that boast a wide range of properties – buying men hiking footwear is no different.
Look for Quality
Outdoor equipment, in general, can be expensive, but it’s important to invest in high-quality footwear. If you go with something that’s cheap, it’s likely made using cheap materials that will easily tear, rip or leak. That being said, when shopping for men hiking footwear, shop in specialty outdoor stores. And when shopping online, make sure you know how different brands fit your feet. Plus, make sure to buy well in advance of your next hike so you have time to exchange your shoes if they don’t fit.
Waterproof vs. Non-Waterproof Footwear
If you plan on trekking in the rain, or if your trail has a lot of streams, consider buying waterproof footwear. However, keep in mind that wearing most waterproof shoes can be miserable when its humid and warm in Australia, as the waterproof membrane will trap moisture and warm around your feet which can break down the skin and cause blisters. That being said, consider the conditions you’ll be facing in most of your hikes, and buy footwear that’s appropriate for those specific conditions.
High-Cut Boots vs. Low-Cut Shoes
If you aren’t carrying a load of over 15kg, you can get away with wearing low-cut hiking shoes in warm weather. If you’re looking for more support, you’ll find mid-cut shoes that rise a bit above the ankles. However, most hikers carrying more than 15kg of weight should look for full boots, as they offer more rigidity and midsole structure that’s necessary for bearing heavy loads. Keep in mind that some low-cut shoes will provide more traction and support than others. That being said, it’s important to do your research on the models you’re looking at before determining whether a specific shoe offers the proper support for your feet.
